Adding text to autoshape doesn't fill the shape like in the help file

Does anyone know how to make the text fill up the autoshape like the
images in the help in Word 2003?

When I add text to an autoshape, the text appears in a square within
the shape, wasting a lot of area.

I want to text to go right up to the edges of the shape.

Anyone know how this is done?

I don't know what shape you are trying to fill, but some of them can be
pretty awkward - diamonds for eg because even if you set the format to have
no border space the text still occurs as a square that does not reach the
sides of the diamond.

There is probably a 'pro' way of getting round this, but I just make a text
box bigger than the autoshape - making sure it is transparent -; plonk it on
top of the autoshape; write my text in the new text box, and stretch to fit
the underlying shape. Then group the two objects so they don't get out of
line again.

Easy!

You can reduce the internal margins of the text box in the AutoShape, and
that can help a little, but the main problem is that the textbox is always a
rectangle/square, so the text never completely fills AutoShapes that are not
rectangular/square.
