Adding text to pictures

Is there a way to add text to a picture inserted into a
Microsoft Word document other than using a text box. I
need to add numbers to areas of the picture and do not
have room for text boxes.

Thank you.

Edit the picture with Paint before inserting it into the document. Press on
the A (for "Add text") button and pick the lower of the two options at the
left, which preserves the background. From the palette of colors at the
bottom left of the screen you can pick a suitable color (before entering the
text) that will stand out against the background.

Thanks for asking this question. You've prompted me to finally solve a
problem that I've been wondering about for quite a while.

If it makes a difference, you could make the text box borders invisible.
