Address blanks out in TO field when Check Name clicked

Old computer died and must scrap. Loaded Outlook 2002 on newly purchased used
HP XP computer. Imported contacts list in text or csv format. All contacts
look good. When I go to address an e-mail and type a name from my contacts
into the TO field, Outlook does not automatically add the e-mail address,
even though I have "Automatic name checking" and "Suggest names while
completing To, Cc, and Bcc fields" checked. So I click the "Check Names"
button. Up comes the name with two possible addresses. The one I want to use
is highlighted, so I click OK and the name suddenly disappears from the TO
line leaving the TO line blank. I've tried
closing and reopening Outlook and rebooting the computer. It still acts in
this uncharacteristic way. Does anyone have a solution?

It's too bad you imported your Contacts, especially by converting them to
some other format. Never necessary. Never a good idea. Always loses or
alters data. Do you still have access to your original data file?
You wouldn't expect autocompletion to work since you haven't populated your
cache yet.
If autoresolution doesn't work, then most likely your import process failed
to create valid, resolved addresses in your email field. Try creating a new
Contact from scratch and see it you can use it to populate your To: field.
Make sure you have configured your Outlook Address Book Service correctly,
along these lines:
