I am running word 2000 on vista , and when click on tools - envelopes &
labels and click on the contact book symbol , I get the message "Either there
is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the
messaging request. Please run Microsoft Outlook and set it as the default
mail client." if I then click OK I get the message "Logon failed. You must
log on to Microsoft Exchange to access your address book. Error code:
"Unspecified error".". My default email program is windows mail.
Any help gatefully received.

And Windows Mail is NOT Outlook, is it? There's your answer right in front
of you.

In windows mail - tools - options -general tab, the section default
messaging programs. the lfirst line says" This program is the default mail
handler" the make default button next to this is greyed out, and cannot be
activated. so why does the system think outlook express is tyhe default, and
how do I change it?

Changing anything in Windows Mail won't change anything. The point is, Word
will NOT use ANY addressbook OTHER than Outlook. You can use an Excel
Spreadsheet or an Access database to do mailmerge from, but ONLY Outlook
Contacts.

The system does not think that Outlook Express is the default mail program.
What it is telling you is that it is (the full version of) Outlook that must
be the default mail program to be able to make use of the Address Book
facility. Outlook and Outlook Express are two different mail programs and
Outlook Express was replaced by Windows Mail in Vista.
