Address book transfer in Outlook 2003

Hi there
I know this question has been asked / answered a few times here but i am
still a little confused .
If i want to copy the entire contacts of my Outlook address book ( inc name
tel numbers address email address etc etc ) , do i use the contact tab on the
bottom left in MS Outlook and then export as a pst or csv file ?
Do i then import it to my new PC into into the new Outlook set up on my pc
or some other way ?
Where do i import it to and how ?
I have been backing up all my personal folders by pst inc all subfolders and
found it a little surprising that upon entering the backup of the pst and
archive pst into the new outlook program that the contacts havent been
transferred automatically .
I am running XP Pro

No.

Do i then import it to my new PC into into the new Outlook set up on my pc

No.

Close Outlook.
Copy the pst file from your old machine and transfer it to somewhere on the
new machine to which you have full read/write permissions. (Your Documents
would be a good place).
Then do Control Panel-Mail-Data files and add the file as a data file.
If it is the new 2003/7 format pst file, then just set it as default
delivery location.
If it's a 97-2002 format file, open Outlook and copy the data across to the
new pst file your Outlook has created. (Assuming you are using 2003 or
later...)

This is why i felt transferring just the contacts as a pst file themselves
might work . I have tried this and it hasnt .
Can you advise further please

pst files contain ALL Outlook data.
Two thoughts - either the pst file contained no contacts, or you aren't
looking in the right place.
What makes you think the contacts were not transferred?

When i hit the address book in Outlook nothing is located there .
I feel virtually certain that everything was backed transferred into the two
pst files ( personal and archive ) as all my emails and calendar entries are
there .
Any further help ?

The Addressbook is only a view of your Contacts Folder.
If you click on Contacts is all the data there?

Hi Gordon
As your message came in i decided to look at the contacts tab bottom left
and well you guessed it the contacts are all there ....some red cheeks here .
How do i get them into my address book ?
If i cant i wont be able send my emails from my list

If you have Contacts in the Contacts folder but they are not accessible when
you click on the To button, check these settings:

Make sure the Contact folder is enabled as an email address book. Right
click the Contacts folder, choose Properties then Outlook Address Book. Is
the box to enable as email address book is checked?

If this is grayed out...

Go to Tools | Email Accounts, choose View or change existing directories or
address book. Is the Outlook Address Book present? If it isn't listed, add
it and close and restart Outlook. If it is listed, then remove it and close
then restart Outlook and repeat these steps to add it.

If you are using Outlook 2007 and the the checkbox is grayed, you'll need to
make a new profile as you can't add the Outlook Address Book service due to
a bug.
