Address Book vs. Contacts List

Is there a way to copy all Address Book names, etc. to the Contacts list under Personal Folders?

This is confusing. In Outlook, the Address Book displays the contents of
your Contacts Folder. That's all it can show. What has lead you to conclude
otherwise? Are you referring to some other address book? Are you using
Outlook?

Yes - Outlook 2003. This seems to relate to the same kind of thing as another Contacts inquiry on this date re: importing old contacts to a new Outlook address book. Simply put, adding a contact to the Contacts list does NOT automatically add it to the Address Book. And, when I add one to the Address Book, it adds to the Contacts, but does NOT show up in the Address Book. Please tell me the correct settings to accomplish merged or coincident lists. I must be setting something wrong.

I've used Outlook/Outlook Express and Ms Office for years, and, believe me, MS has managed to make address/contact management a very confusing area. Importing/exporting is right out of the dark ages. This is not from one who is simply not computer literate. I have installed/run many apps for my business and personal, and MS Outlook addresses/contacts takes the prize.

You're still losing me here. Contacts should never be added to the Address
Book. There is no such thing as an Address Book in Outlook. The Address Book
is merely a view of the electronic addresses in your Contacts Folder. All
Contact data entry is done in the Contacts Folder. If your Outlook Address
Book is configured correctly, entries in the Contacts Folder will show up in
the Outlook Address Book. If they do not, then your Outlook Address Book is
not configured correctly.

And, what is it then when one opens the "thingy" and there is an icon to add a new "contact"? But, it doesn't.

F

So tell what the "thingy" is when one highlights the book icon and Outlook calls it an "Address Book"?

There certainly is "such a thing as an an Address Book" in Outlook. You even refer to it in other email replies this same date to others in this chat room by the name "Address Book". - namely, John M B as follows:
*****************************************************
All Outlook data is stored in the PST file, including your Contacts. Any
Contacts you import successfully into your Contacts Folder will be displayed
in your Outlook Address Book. Explain the evidence you see to the contrary
so we can figure out what your problem is.

************************************************************
On my PC, I have the Outlook Contacts listing and the Address Book list in side-by-side windows. All items in the Address Book do appear in the Contacts listing; but conversely, all items n my Contacts listing do NOT appear in my Address Book. I simply want to find out how to copy/import/transfer/migrate/move/(whatever one wants to call it) to the Address Book list which saves everything in a list called Contacts, vs. Accounts or Business Contacts, under a heading in the dialog box called Outlook Address Book.
I may sound impatient with you, but you state things about what isn't in Outlook that are there, and that is unhelpful. How does one copy stuff from one to the other? Simple question. Please provide "correct" settings for me to input - I promise I will comply.

It's a mistake.
As I said, you add Contacts to the Contacts Folder.

Russ,
I immediately added a new entry to my Contacts list. Guess what? It does NOT appear under Address Book. I'm not doing everything wrong here. You're answer does not tell me how to "correctly" setup the address book as you said I should earlier. And, what do you mean specifically by "there is a mistake"? Who's mistake, what mistake - can't you be more specific? Who is your supervisor?

R

Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook]

Actually, I posted the answer to your question about how to fix the Outlook
Address Book 30 minutes before you made this post, but the server dropped
it. I also post it several times a day here in reply to other posts, so the
information is readily available. It is also well documented in the KB.

As I told you, the Address Book is merely a view of your Contacts Folder. It
contains no data. That is why it is a poor design to have the Add New
Contacts option within the Address Book interface. It does not belong there.
Their mistake, not yours.

You have left out some steps as to what created your problem with the
address book, but it is not unusual for the Outlook Address Book to "lose
track" of the connection to its Contacts Folder when you move or import your
PST or update your Outlook version or OS. Use the following steps to reset
the connection.
Note that in some instances you may actually have to remove the Outlook
Address Book completely from your Profile, close Outlook, and then re-add it
before you can get it to work.

Go to Tools | E-mail accounts, select "View or change existing directories
or address books", and click OK. If you don't see the OAB in the Directories
and Address Books list, click the Back button, then select "Add a new
directory or address book", then "Additional Address Books", and add the
OAB. Then keep clicking Back until you get back to the first dialog box,
and go back to the Directories and Address Books list as you did earlier.
Once the OAB appears in the list, select it and then click Change to make
sure the Contacts folder(s) you want to display are listed. If any of them
aren't listed, you'll need to enable those Contacts folders as Outlook
Address Books by right clicking the folder, selecting Properties, clicking
the Outlook Address Book tab, and checking the "Show this folder as an
E-mail address book" box. Make sure you restart Outlook after making these
changes.

I tried this and, "Show this folder as an E-mail address book" is greyed out
and not checked. I can't check it.

Then add the Outlook Address Book Service to your profile. If you don't know
how, post your Outlook version. I can't read minds.

For Outlook 2003 is there a way to do this via GPO or a script suc
that you don't have to touch each machine and do it. we are rollin
out new computers this quarter and it would be nice to script/use a GP
to do this....
