Harry really doesn't know he's posted this to the world, does he?

I wrote an email to shame one woman who posted junk, and realized
that she had absolutely no idea she'd posted to a newsgroup. How is
that even possible? I mean, you _do_ have to set up newsgroups on
your system, right? (I know I did) I suppose you could just send an
email to microsoft.public.access, but where would a person ever
come up with the idea to do that.

I'm just astounded.

We get a LOT of such messages, only in this group.

My understanding is that it's a glitch in Microsoft Windows Mail. The program
- like Outlook Express - handles both email and newsgroup postings. I'm told
(I haven't installed the program) that it offers both "private" (email) and
"public" (newsgroup) folders when you're composing a message; and that it
defaults to microsoft.public.access if you compose an email in a public
folder.

I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has Windows Mail installed.

I use Windows Mail. I suspect you're right about what's happening, John,
but I don't see how they manage to do it. Sure, if you're reading a
newsgroup and click the "new message" button, you get a new newgroup post.
But it's pretty obvious that it's not an e-mail, as there's nowhere to fill
in an e-mail address. Maybe the ones that show up with e-mail addresses in
the subject line are the result of someone making this mistake in a
heads-down mode, so they think they're typing in the To: line, when the
focus is really in the Subject: line.

I can't recall if the newsgroups are automatically configured upon
installation with WinMail; I'd have thought you'd need to at least
subscribe to some.

I delete a lot of such messages, and reply by email to some of them (using the
address in the headers). They all seem to be from very unsophisticated users,
and I'd guess most of them have no idea what a newsgroup even IS, much less
that they're writing to one.

I should get my second machine set up and put on my "dunce hat" and see if I
can figure out how a naive user might be misled into posting. It can't be all
that hard, since it happens a lot!

maybe, because MS Access has _SUCH_A_SHITTY_REPUTATION_ then maybe
they should rename it to something else (so it doesn't show up first
on the list alphabetically
