adjusting column widths

In word 2003 i am finding great difficulty in pulling columns to adjust
their width. I can pull the vertical lines with the mouse but the
table starts acting crazily as it becomes more compact automatically
and i just cannot 'pull' and adjust to my satisfaction. It is often
less time consuming to make a new table rather than adjust the column
widths (manually) by dragging. Yes, some of my documents are created
in earlier version of word

Hi Kesharsan,

You might be able to get more precise control over your column widths
if you select the entire table (if you want to adjust them all) and
then go to TABLE, "Table Properties", "Column". You can set the width
of each one in exact measurements (according to your ruler). If you
just want to change the width of one column, you can select it alone,
and go through the same process.

Good luck with this!

Select the column whose width you want to change.
Choose Cell Height and Width from the Table menu. The Cell Height and
Width dialog box is displayed, with the Column tab selected.
Using the Width of Column control, set the column width as desired.
Use the Previous Column or Next Column buttons, as desired, to select
other columns.
Repeat steps 3 and 4 until you have set all the column widths desired.
Click on OK to close the Table Properties dialog box.

If you are using Word 2000 or later, follow these steps:

Select the column whose width you want to change.
Choose Table Properties from the Table menu. The Table Properties
dialog box is displayed, with the Column tab selected.
Using the Preferred Width control, set the column width as desired.
Use the Previous Column or Next Column buttons, as desired, to select
other columns.
Repeat steps 3 and 4 until you have set all the column widths desired.
Click on OK to close the Table Properties dialog box.
