Adobe Acrobat 8 and Word Bookmark problem

I recently installed Acrobat Professional 8, which I use to convert long MS
Word docs (created in Word 2003) to PDF for viewing on screen. When I enable
Add Bookmarks to Adobe PDF and convert a doc, I get extra characters added to
a field inserted in the header. For example, 0BGetting Started, 1BCreating a
Template, 2B, Downloading Data, etc. The extra characters (the OB, 1B, 2B) do
not appear unless the Add Bookmarks is turned on, and are related to a
specific Word field I inserted in the header
..--{STYLEREF "Heading 1" \MERGEFORMAT}

I didn't have this problem in Adobe Acrobat Professional 7 and earlier
versions. The only workaround I can think of now is to disable Add Bookmarks
and create them manually, Ugh! Does anyone else have other ideas?
