Adobe Acrobat and Excel Conflict

It *appears* that since I have installed Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0 that I have
2 problems with Excel:
1- I cannot close Excel once i have opened it - i can only close worksheets.
The Close "X" top right corner is greyed out.
2- Because of this, when i try to shut down my computer, it sometimes hangs
up, often saying that it can't close Adobe, which is not even open! (hence my
suspicion of the connection)

Any ideas? I am running Excel 2000 and Windows 2000
