Adobe Acrobat Reader & Microsoft Picture Manager

I am running Windows XP on a brand new PC. I wanted to load Adobe Acrobat Reader and went to adobe.com, downloaded the software etc. Having done this, I clicked on an Adobe PDF file, and was automatically taken to Microsoft Picture Manager. I can't read the Adobe PDF file, but I can see hundreds of thumbnail pictures, some of which look familiar and are from websites that I have visited. Can anyone tell me what is going on here?
