Adobe font not showing up in Word

I have downloaded an Adobe font called Garamond, Bold (which with the comma
in the name is the postscript file for Garamond Semi-Bold). It is installed
in my Fonts file with all the other files, but my drop-down box in Word will
not show it as an option I can use. I have deleted it and re-installed it
several times, and rebooted several times, but still no show. I have
numerous other Adobe fonts that do show up. Does Word not recognize certain
kinds of type? I have Word 2000 on Windows XP.

Postscript fonts require both a screen version as well as the printer
version in order to display & print... sounds like you have the printer font
(outline) only. Prior to XP Adobe Type Manager was included with the OS, but
I don't think XP includes it - PS fonts aren't as widely used as they once
were outside specialty fields. In order to generate the screed bitmap you
need ATM or ATM Lite. See here:

Thanks, Bob, for the info. I do have a version of ATM installed ("EXE: 4.0
Build 90 Lite"), and other Adobe fonts that I installed at the same time as
this one seem to show up fine, though I have not checked the entire list to
see if any others are missing (it's a long list). Am I missing something else?

It finally dawned on me that Win 2k & XP don't actually require ATM unless
you're using Master Fonts, so that shouldn't be the problem after all.
However, the more current version is 4.1, so whether it may help I'm not
sure. The only other thing I can think of is that the "garamond, bold" is a
subset that requires a parent file for its structure. You'd probably be
better off contacting Adobe in this case.

As far as the other fonts showing up, is it possible that they *aren't* PS?

Thanks again for your response. We are now thinking that maybe Word does not
recognize the font because it is a semi-bold font, and maybe Word supports
only regular bold and italic? We're looking at ways to scale or modify the
regular Garamond font to see if we can tinker with it enough to get something
approximate. We'll see...

I missed the connection with *semi* which is a subset not supported in many
apps that aren't long on typesetting features. In Word that will most
probably be the issue... If you have InD or QX take a look there. As long
as it's recognized there the answer is obvious:)

Yes, the original design was done in InDesign, which does support it. We were
trying to make a Word version of our letterhead that everyone could print
from each machine and still have color control. Thanks again for your
help--we really appreciate the fast responses!
