Adobe plug-in fails when trying to attach a file as a PDF

The Adobe plug-in on the "new message" windows launches the program to try to
convert an attachement as a PDF. It will open the program used to create the
file, but then hangs up and sends an error message requesting files from the
installation disc. After inserting the disc, the plug-in still fails to
convert the file to a PDF. I have uninstalled Acrobat Standard 6.0 and all
of its components, and reinstalled. The plug-in results in the same
failures. Is there missing .dll files or associations that might need to be
made? What can I do to try to resolve this?
