interms of productivity/collaboration/predictability/control when
compared to standalone version.

It definitely allows collaboration and control. Whether this makes things
more predictable or productive can not be determined without knowing more
about your organization.

In my opinion, proper implementation and adoption are more important than
the tool itself.

MS Project by itself is a scheduling tool and not a complete Project
Management tool that includes collaboration, risk and issue managment,
document management, essentially a centralised point for all of your
Projects. Thats where Project server comes into place.
