Advice on enabling Active-x does not work.

Tried to connect to 'Windows Update' and was intercepted by a message telling
me I couldn't (even though I have before) because my browser (IE 6) was not
configured to allow Active X. I was led through a series of steps
(essentially, setting 'Medium' security and ensuring Windows update sites are
on my approved list), but I still can't get past that initial message telling
me my configuration is wrong. Yet another endless loop. Is it a coincidence
that this has cropped up soon after installing SP2 for Win XP? And how on
earth have I ended up being redirected to an Office discussion area?

If you have XP-SP2, you will get a small drop-down message at the top of
the browser window (1 line); if you read it and click where it says, the
active-x control will be installed.
