Affect on sound files when moving forward and backward

C

ChristineP

I want to play different background music for different sections of my
presentation. The music plays until a new section is reached. However, if you
press the forward or backward buttons the music won't play.

I've seen instructions for inserting blank pages but they tend to deal with
simple animation (pings and the like) and/or instructions relate to automated
actions on a particular slide. Anyway, inserting a blank slide for every
single slide would double an already huge page count!

Putting a sound button on each slide seems impractical as well, since the
music would play from the beginning with each click.

Any suggestions?

Your music should play even if you're going backwards. How many slides did
you set the sounds to play for? PPT considers each transition (whether
forward or backward) to be a slide....

Hi, Echo. For one group, the sound is set to play automatically from slide 1
to slide 12. It works if I go back 1, but will not play if I then go
forward...

Well, try setting it to play from slides 1 through 999. I suspect you want
it to play through 12 slides, but you're actually transitioning more than 12
times because of the forward and backward transitions.

Even if you set the sound to play through 999 slides, it should stop when
the next sound starts.

Hi again, Echo.

I set the first sound to play through 999 slides, as you suggested, and this
works - thanks. HOWEVER!...at the next section, where I want another music
file to play, the first sound continues on top of the first. Hope you have
some more suggestions!

Hm. That shouldn't happen.

Which version of PPT are you using again? And what kind of files are the
sounds? Are they both MP3, or something different?

I'm trying to think if there's a way to "stop previous sound" in a sound
inserted via Insert|Movies and Sounds|Sound from File (as opposed to one
buried in a slide transition). I'll have to check and try to repro later --
gotta finish some homework right now!

I'm using Powerpoint 2003 SP2. The sound files are both mp3.

At Slide 1, I want the 1st sound file to start playing as soon as the
presentation starts. At Slide 13, I want the sound begun at Slide 1 to stop,
and start playing the 2nd sound file. Once these are storted, I will want to
insert addtional sound files for each of the remaining 10 or so slide
sections.

Here are the settings for Slide 1 and Slide 13.

Effect: Start playing from beginning
Stop playing after 999
Timing: Start after previous
Repeat until end of slide
Trigger animate as part of click sequence

Slide 13
Start after previous

I really appreciate your help, Echo. Good luck with your homework!

Hi Christine,

that terrific ! I was looking for having 2 sounds simultaneously;
(I can imagine I'm not alone !)
did you really get that ?
the first sound started at the first slide continuing while the sound
started at slide 13 is playing ?
I tried to do the same with 2 wave sounds, it doesn't work !
are you using wave or something else ?

regards

hi again,

sorry read to fast, its working with mp3 files !
that's great !

as indicated by Echo, an easy way to stop a sound is to start it using
the "transition" parameters, and check "continue until the next sound"
(or some thing like that, I'm on a French PP)

thanks a lot for this idea

Echo S

Thanks for posting this info, Christine. I'm able to reproduce the problem
here, too, on PPT 2003 SP2 -- when I use stop playing after 999 slides (to
allow for the unknown number of forward and back transitions), my first MP3
keeps playing when the 2nd one starts. I swear, I so don't remember this
happening before (losing my mind, I tell you!), but Shyam reminded me that
this is why he created his Music Span add-in. You may want to check it
out -- http://skp.mvps.org/mspan.htm

Music Span is a fantastic add-in, but you'll want to note that it has to be
installed on the machine playing the presentation. So if you need to
distribute the file, it might not be the perfect solution for you.

Sorry I can't come up with anything better! I keep hoping someone else who's
more knowledgeable in this area than I will pop in with some ideas!
