afile.xls is locked for editing error.

We have a Windows 2003SP2 server with Windows 2000SP4 Pro. We are opening
"afile.xls" via a mapped drive on the Windows 2000SP4 Pro connecting to the
Windows 2003SP2 server. We are using MS Office 2003SP2. Ocassionally when
we try to open "anyfile.xls" we receive a dialog box indicating "anyfile.xls"
is locked for editing. This happens 1 out of 8 times. Once it happens, it
remains this way until the server is rebooted. Only one user is working with
the file at this point. We have disabled all AntiVirus products, and still
receive this error. There is no indication of anything in the event logs for
this error. We have searched the Internet for this issue, and cannot seem to
find a fix for this. Can someone please help us out with this? Thanks in
advance.

Hello Steve,

did you solve this problem?
I encounter the same behavior on some XLS-files on my W2003-SP2 Srv,
and still haven't found an answer...
It happens only on one of the drives, shadow-copy enabled, and the user
has offline folders activated (user's home drives)
