after 04 test drive vX docs don't open

Hi all - have Office vX installed... for some crazy reason, downloaded a test
drive of Word 2004. Have uninstalled it - but now, double clicking on all
Word docs(created in vX) results in an error. I have tried right clicking on
a doc - get info - change open with from Office 11.x Default to Office 10.x -
then selected Change All Documents of this Type... and no joy, the change
does not stick! When I look at the Get Info - the app selected for opening is
still Office 11.x 'Default'! I have tried the 'Remove Office' tool, I have
cleared caches, I have deleted any prefs. Somewhere the reference to Office
11.x as Default app type is still in there. Somehow just running this test
drvie has really messed up the ability to run the existing Office vX. Does
anyone know where to remove this?? How to fix this?

Hi Dodge -

What I don't see among all your efforts is the use of Disk Utility - Repair
Disk Permissions. If you haven't done that (which should be done after any
installation/removal of software), give it a shot, log out/in & see if the
situation improves. If not, post back with results.

Yes, did try repair permissions... no joy. I think if I can find where the
Word/Office 11.x file references are stored and edited them out - so one
doesn't see 'Word 11.x Default' as an app choice when setting open with....
then perhaps this will go away. There must be some place in the system files
to remove 11.x references. I'd hate to have to wipe and reinstall the whole
computer to 'fix' this.

The way I see it, Office 2004 was not removed properly. You mention that you
uninstalled Office and subsequently ran the Remove Office tool; does that
mean you deleted the Test Drive folder, and when the problems appeared, you
used the Remove Office tool that's part of Office v.X's Value Pack? If yes,
that might be the reason why it's not working. Try using the Remove Office
tool that came with the test drive (if you don't have that anymore, you
might have to redownload the test drive).
