After auto update: Error when closing word 2007, tries to recover

G

Gary Fuller

Microsoft Office 2007
Vista

The system did an auto-update (is this my first problem?) last night. I
started WORD this morning and when I closed WORD I received the "Word has
stopped working...." then the "trying to recover..." then another "stopped
working" with the option button to clost WORD.

This is regardless if I save or do not save, open a new document or an old
one, pray or cry.

It is usually caused by leaving Word running when Windows Update installs
updates and restarts the system. Not sure why though.

That is exactly what happened to me. Word was open when the autoupdate ran. I
wasn't thinking that "update tuesday" would run wednesday night. The system
was restarted after the update. This morning, the mouse wouldn't move the
curser in Word, only the arrow keys. Quitting Word gave the same error
messages as below.

I feel sorry for those who would never find this forum!

I don't have access to the 7/23 thread. My system updated last night while
Word was open and now I have this issue. What's the solution? (We have
WSUS 3.0 on the server and some updates were approved yesterday.)

thanks for your help.

Sounds like you have corrupted the Word Data Key. Run Regedit and navigate
to the Word Data Key and delete it. Word will create a new key when it is
restarted.

Word DataKey

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\version number\Word\Data

Thanks for this information! When I go to that directory you stated I have
the office and no folder that says version number. I am assuming you mean a
folder that represents that version number. The folder is
office/12/word/Data. Am I deleting the entire folder that says Data?

Thanks

Yes: delete Data entirely. This works for other versions of Word, so
substitute version number for 10.0, 11.0, 12.0, etc.

Help! Help! For some reason, random pc's, here at the library (all on
RoadRunner) seem to freeze in Word 2003. A Patron will be typing a letter,
and all of a sudden all the icons turn gray and only the icon of the floppy
(save) is darkened. When you try to hit it and save your file, it comes up
with an error telling you, you cannot save. So you close word and open word,
click the folder to find your file, highlight your file and then click open
and repair. This sometimes will bring your file back, but for most people,
they loose all their work, this is very frustrating. All of these PC's have
been imaged. Can someone please suggest something? My email I can be
reached at is (e-mail address removed). Thank you in advance for any help
you can give.

Never work with a floppy drive. Always open and save from your local HDD and
then copy to/from the floppy.
