after deleting a footnote Word does not renumber the notes

I have used Microsoft Word's automatic numbering system to write footnotes in
an article I am writing. But when I tried to delete two footnotes Microsoft
Word did not renumber the footnote. I need help to correct this error.

Are you tracking changes? Note that the footnote numbering (as well as other
numbering in the document) won't be correct unless you accept the changes.
