After formatting text Word closes

After formatting text with bold, underline, italic, etc. and moving the
cursor to the toolbar Word automatically closes with no warning or error
message. What could cause this?

WordXYZ and Windows ABC?

Probably you have Word 2003 and Windows XP?

Go to Office Setup and remove the Handwriting Recognition utility.
