after HD swap/install, installer popup for excel/MSword docs

I just did a hard drive clone and swap and now, every time I double-click on
an EXCEL or MSWord document, an installer popup window comes up saying:

Preparing to install

after which another popup says:

An error occurred and this feature is no longer functioning properly.
Please run Setup and Select "Repair..." to restore this application.

Tried that, inserted my OFFICE CD and then another popup window occurs about
now being able to find some file in a cab on the C: drive.

Popup:

The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is
unavailable.


I give up on this simple HD swap.

The resolution for this problem has to do with the %systemroot%Windows\Installer folder
being EMPTY.

I just cloned my hard drive using Seagate's DiscWizard and it seems the contents of this
folder were NOT copied during the process. FTR, this folder is shown as "dim" in Window
Explorer that signifies it being a hidden or system folder?? so that might have something
to do with it.

Restored the contents of this folder from a DVD backup and problem went away.
