After I installed Office '03, Word keeps giving me error messages.

I installed Office '03 (Student and Teacher Edition) on a new computer, and
Word is the only program that won't work. When I try to use Word, I get an
error message that says "Word has encountered a problem and needs to close".
Word then restarts. About 1 minute later, the same thing happens again.
Needless to say, it's almost impossible to use Word. I ordered Office from
Amazon.com, so I don't know if Amazon's the problem. Also, I've run several
virus scans on my computer, so there are no viruses causing the problem. Any
suggestions?

Hi Suzanne !

First, the problem is the dialog box "Word has encountered a problem and
needs to close" appearing all the time and with no reason for that: some
times when I try to "copy and paste" some part of another document, and
other times simply when I type some words or even letters. I thought that it
was a problem with especific files, because I can use others documents
normally . I´m not sure about that, because when I create a blank document
the same error happened. By the other hand, I opened those files in other
computer and no problem occurred...

So, I tried the TF suggestions:
I renamed all ".dot" files I found to ".old"
I deleted the "Data" key in Windows XP Registry
I uninstalled the Adobe 5.0
I changed the Norton Anti Virus configuration for Office, as TF recommended
Finally, I reinstalled the Office XP.

Now, I´m waiting some tips...I´m thinking about formatting my hard disk ,
and reinstalling all softwares, including Windows XP...

PS: I feel that the problem is those specific files ( they came from Word
2000, I guess..) , but I´m not sure if it is possible that some few
documents may cause this error.

Thanks for any help !!

Roberto

Hi everyone,
I'm not sure if I made it clear in my original post ... I get the exact same
error message that Roberto mentioned, but I get it anytime I try to use Word
for any reason, whether it's opening a document, copying and pasting,
creating a new document, etc. Suzanne, would the suggestions at the site you
mentioned still apply in this case? I installed Word from a brand new
installation disk onto a brand new computer. My computer is a Dell and I've
heard that sometimes Dells have problems with Office ... does anyone know
anything about that? (maybe not since this is a Microsoft website not Dell
:)).
Thanks for your help everyone!

You definitely need to try the troubleshooting steps. First question: Do you
have a printer installed locally and selected as the default?

The problem is described in KB912022. Microsoft has a hotfix for the problem
but has not released it yet. Microsoft offers the Hotfixe on a no-charge
basis but the only way to get it is to pay U$35.00 to a Microsoft Support
Professional on a Pay-Per-Incident basis to resolve this issue. You may
contact them at: (800)-936-5700, Monday to Friday, 5:00 A.M. - 9:00 P.M.
Pacific Time and Saturday to Sunday, 6:00 A.M. - 3:00 P.M. Pacific Time.

You just have to deal with it or pay the U$35.00 as Microsoft Knowledge Base
Article 912022 states that there is a "post-Microsoft Office 2003 Service
Pack 2 hotfix". The supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it
is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article.
This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not
severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next
Microsoft Office 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix."

If it is determined that you need the hotfix, then you will NOT be charged
the $35 fee, provided you don't introduce any other support issues into the
call.
