preview crashes in word, any ideas...

I know that installing updates is usually a bad idea, especially those from
microsoft, but i think i must have downloaded sp3 in a bundle with windows
update which i accidentally turned on after finally deciding to get windows
XP sp2...

now i cannot see any autoshapes at all, even after i JUST make on,e i make
another and the last one dissapears, its still there, just invisible.

They print, but you cant really see whats going on so its difficult, also if
i try to preveiw a document with autoshapes in it, word dumps out completely.

Any ideas or should i just reinstall on SP0 :eek:D would be best if i could
just get the stupid service pack to work correctly (oh wait - thats
microsofts job) but i guess we're all pretty used to doing it for them by now
;o)

anyways, any ideas would be greatly appreciated,

James

Sounds like either a graphics driver (most likely) or a printer driver
problem. Go to the support sites for the vendors and download the latest
drivers.

A few things to check:

1. On the View tab of Tools | Options, make sure that "Drawings" is checked
and "Picture placeholders" isn't.

2. On the Print tab of Tools | Options, make sure that "Drawing objects" is
checked.

3. If you have set a text box to No Line and No Fill and then selected those
as the AutoShape defaults, all AutoShapes will be drawn with no line and no
fill, making them invisible.

Hey people, first of all, yeah all my settings are correct (drawing etc) i
never changed them from the defaults, to the person that said about the
graphics issue, im not going to fiddle with my graphics drivers, which work
FINE with EVERY OTHER peice of software that i use. I will just reinstall
word if that is the case, all my drivers are digitally signed so its
microsoft's problem, not theirs ;o)

Oh yeah, im not being a retard and posting invisible autoshapes. are people
actually that dumb!?

If so, I'm REALLY not one of them. All autoshapes, appear and disappear
randomly, even those which i created months ago, they print fine, so they are
definately there. I think i should just delete the microsoft crap and buy
wordperfect instead!

aaah if only!

Unless anyone has an answer, i'm just going to reinstall..

PS any reason why microsoft dont bloody answer themselves. Cant they AFFORD
to give decent tech service to deal with all the problems with their shoddy
software!?

imho, reinstalling Word won't fix anything in this case. You might try
reducing or turning off hardware acceleration in Start | Control Panel |
Display | Advanced | Troubleshooting. If doing this adversely affects
your other programs, you can easily change it back.

Word uses the graphics and printer drivers far harder that almost any other
app. If you don't want to follow our advice, don't bother to return here
again. The MVPs are unpaid users who unselfishly pass on their experience
and knowledge FREE OF CHARGE. If you are going to be rude and unwilling to
accept free, unbiased advice, that's you're tough luck.

OK lets set this straight. REINSTALLING WILL WORK

I havent changed my graphics card drivers in 2 yrs, the only change has been
the service pack, i will not ruin all other programs just to run SP3 on word!
I appreciate your advice, but when it is innapropriate or incorrect, i will
dismiss it, dont be offended if you are wrong, you dont know all of the stuff
that is going on, but thats ok, cheers for trying to help...

moving on, the problem is solely with word SP3, is there any way i can UNDO
it! or perhaps make it work with a lovely stable system before SP3 ;o)

Cheers,

James
