After merged fileds become Bold and Italic and Date is wrong

Topher Morris

I am having a problem with Word XP. I set up a merge document and an
excel spreadsheet. After the merge is completed onto a new word
document the last 2 fields that I need become set as bold and italic.
The other fields do not. On the main document they are set as normal
text. Also, the date that is brought over is being put in as
mm/dd/yyyy when in excel it is set to month day,year.
Any thoughts on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

You can either
- change the way Word connects to Excel (check Word
Tools|Options|General|Confirm conversion at open, go through the connection
process again, and select "Excel via DDE" when offered). You need Excel for
that. Or
- add formatting switches to the appropriate fields. Press Alt-F9 to reveal
the "field codes" in Word, then if you have e.g.

{ MERGEFIELD mydate }

try changing it to

{ MERGEFIELD mydate \@"MM/DD/YYYY" \*Charformat }

and ensure the "M" in mergefield is not bold or italic.

If you have problems with the month and day being switched around, you
probably need to use the first approach.
