After reinstallation of Office 2000, Office Update fails

I was forced to reinstall XP, then to reinstall Office -- each to the same
directories.

Trying to bring Office up to speed, some of the files are still in place and
detected by Office, but not by Update.

Update insists that SP3 be installed, but About shows it is installed.

Help??

Can you complete a detect & repair from the Help menu
in Word?
