Check out Conditional Formatting in XL Help.
Say you wanted cell A1 to turn red 3 days before the date that's stored
in it. Select A1, choose Format/Conditional Formatting... and enter this
with the dropdowns and textbox:
Formula is =(A1-TODAY())<=3
Click Format, choose the Patterns tab, and select Red for your cell
color. Click OK, OK.
If you are in Excel 2004, and you want a more active alert than that, simply
select the cell and go to Tools/Flag for Follow Up... That lets you enter a
date and time for an onscreen Reminder (Office Notification). Don't forget
to save the document. By default there's a reminder sound too. That can be
turned off and on in Entourage Preferences/Notification, or in Office
Notifications app and menu. You can modify the Reminder in the Entourage
Tasks list, where it's now listed as a Task. When the moment comes, whether
Excel is open or not. you get a reminder on screen, a sound alert (if on)
and a link in the reminder to the workbook, which opens if you click it.
Also a Compete box and/or Dismiss button to dismiss it. (I can't recall if
Excel X had this too.)
