alert sound repeats

I'm using Entourage 2004 (vers. 11.3.6) and enjoy using the sound sets
for the alert sounds. However, for some reason the alert sounds now
repeat. If there is new mail, I hear something like "You've got
mail!" ... "You've got mail!". Frankly, I need help with this. I need
help with this! I only need to hear the alert sound once. How do I fix
it?

If you have multiple accounts set up, you will hear a sound play for each
account or folder you download mail from.

If you're only dealing with one account but are hearing a sound for multiple
messages received, check your rules (Tools > Rules) to see if there are any
rules running on received messages with a "Play sound" action.
