Alfabatize pages

W

William Poe

I have written an e-book of sorts and it consumed more pages than I ever
expected. (365 to be exact) and I would like to alphabetize it in the table
of contents. Is there any way this can be done by the page title except by
moving each page one at a time and then setting the table of contents.
Hope some one can help me......

One approach:

Outline view in Word lets you reorganize your entire paper by dragging
the headings around. So if you show only the headings, and then sort the
headings, then all the text under each heading will stay with the
heading, but the headings will sort in order.

So to do this, you will need to apply Word's built-in Heading 1 to your
page titles, if you haven't already.

If you don't like how Heading 1 looks, you can change it:

If you have already formatted all your chapter titles, say, as 14pt
bold, you could use Find and Replace to find all text that is 14pt bold
and format it as Heading 1, rather than doing it manually.

Then View | Outline, click on the 1 on the toolbar to only show the
headings, select all, and use Table | Sort. I would MAKE A COPY before
doing the sort--I have only ever tested this with about 10 lines of
text, not a 365 page book.

Applying Heading 1 to your page titles will also make it easy to create
your table of contents:

Side note: I find it odd that alphabetical is the best way to present a
*book*. I suppose if it's some sort of manual. It sounds like it might
be disjointed for the reader.

Hi David:

As soon as you say "Alphabetize" you are asking for an INDEX, not a Table of
Contents. A Table of Contents lists all headings with your nominated
styles, in the sequence in which they appear in the book. An Index lists
all text in the book that you mark as being an index entry, in alphabetic
sequence.

Word has a built-in tool for making Indexes (and it's one of the best tools
that exist...). Look it up in the Help, and come back to us with further
questions if you need to.

For example: You do not have to put an Index at the back of the book.
That's where users expect to find it in a paper publication. But you can
put it anywhere you like, including in a frame to the left of the text, and
that may be more appropriate for an e-book. This is also described in the
Help.

If you have an Index in the publication, you can also have a Table of
Contents.

Cheers
