Aligning of Footnote Text

Hello

I am working with Word 2003.

When a footnote text goes over several lines, I would like to have the
footnote text aligned under the beginning of the text, not under the Footnote
Reference number (similar to bullets and numbering). Can the style be changed
to reflect this?

Is it possible to have a tab rather than a space between Footnote Reference
and Footnote Text?

Thanks for your feedback. I do not want just a manual tab. I would like an
automatic tab in the style so that the text is indented from the number and,
if more than one line, then aligned with the text above, not with the number.
The default seems to be one empty space after the number, then the text is
aligned with the number if taking more than one line.

Word does not allow you to do this automatically. In fact, Word doesn't
allow you to specify what character should appear between the footnote
reference number and footnote text. Instead, Word places a space between
these two elements.

A potential solution to adding tabs is to use Word's Find and Replace
feature. You can make sure that all footnotes have the tab you desire by
following these steps:

1. Prest Ctrl + H or choose replace from the Edit menu. Word displays teh
Replace tab of the Find and Replace dialog box.

2. If available, click on the More button.

3. Make sure that the Use Wildcards check box is selected.

4. In the Find What box, type "(^2) " without the quotes. Note there's a
space after the last parenthesis.

5. With the cursor still in the Find box, click on the Format button, then
choose Style. Word displays the Find Style dialog box.

6. In the list of styles presented, choose the Footnote Text style and
click on OK.

7. In th eReplace With box, type "\1^t" without the quotes.

8. Press Replace All, then close the Find and Replace dialog box.

When finished, all of the footnotes will have the tab between the footnote
reference number and the beginning of the footnote text.

Note that in addition to this, you will need to set a hanging indent where
you have set the tab stop (or where you want the tab stop). See also
