I write a document of this form

1 This is sentence1.

1.1 This is sentence2.

I want the sentences to be aligned at the left and
the numbering also to be aligned. Is there any way of
aigning parts of a line across lines?

agreed

I have the following sequence:-

1 Heading(with underline
1.1 Sentence 1
1.2 Sentence 2

2 Heading with underline
2.1 Sentence 3
2.2 Sentence 2

I want 1.1,1.2,2,2.1,2.1 to be aligned at the left.

I have finished typing , How do I align them now?

thanks

If you have created this sequence correctly using Outline view and Heading
styles, then simply change the format of the paragraph styles so they
display the same indents and tab settings and that those indents and tabs
are sufficient to accommodate the extra numbers.
If you have formatted the document by manual formatting there is no simple
solution. You would have to search and replace the numbers, search and
replace the tab settings and start again with outline numbered heading
styles.
