Alignment doesn't save in .xls format

If I have a set of data and set the whole columns to center align, when I save and reopen the .xls document, the data already input maintains the formatting. However, whenever I add new data in a new row or in an empty space in an existing row, in automatically formats itself to left alignment. What's going on?

I just tested this and it works fine for me. What is your version of Excel?
I am using OS 10.5.7 though, but I don't think this is the issue. Have you
upgraded to SP2?
