Alignment & Formatting Word 2003

We have Office 2003 and constantly find problems in Word 2003 when we try to
align or format text. If we want to right-align a line, for example, we
highlight the text, press right-align and it does it for the WHOLE document.
When we press UNDO it seems to correct itself but its extremely annoying.
The same problem happens no matter what formatting we do, ie bold, colour etc
Does anyone know how to correct this problem please? We have updated all
the latest updates from Microsoft but the problem is still with us.
