All Documents Open in Page Layout View

I'm running Mac Word v.X, with SP1 installed, in OS 10.3.4.

Word Preferences have not been changed in years.

For the past week or so, all Word documents open in Page Layout view,
regardless of how they were created or saved. I never use this view, so
it's not because of something I did to a document.

Word/Preferences/View does not offer an option for default document
view.

How do I change back to Normal view for all my documents? And how did
this happen to strat with?

Hi Noisy:

This setting is not held in Word preferences. Word opens each document in
the view that was active when the document was closed.

However, if you create a new document, the view will default to the view
that was active when the template from which the document was created was
last saved.

If you do not explicitly select a different template, that is your "Normal"
template. So to correct this, you need to edit your Normal template, and to
do that, you need to be aware that Word ALWAYS has the Normal template
"open", and it is always in memory while Word is running. If anything
happens to change Normal template, Word holds a copy in memory for each open
document.

So to make sure of emptying the memory of strange copies, re-launch Word.

1) Dismiss the default blank document.

2) Open your Normal template.

3) Switch to the View you want.

4) Add and remove a space (to convince Word that the file has been changed
and "needs" to be saved).

5) Save Normal template.

6) Quit and re-launch Word.

It is possible, although unlikely, that the Normal template does not exist!
This is EXTREMELY unlikely: here's how to deal with it if you are the
one-in-a-million users to whom this case applies:

If you have NEVER changed any settings in the Normal template, Word will use
its built-in defaults as the Normal template, and never save it as a file.
It's almost impossible to work with Word for a day without doing "something"
that changes a setting in the Normal template, so this is a very rare case.

It is more likely that you have not "found" your Normal template. The best
way to be sure that you have found it is to look in Word>Preferences>File
Locations>User Templates. If you attempt to modify the User Templates
location, Word will show you where the copy of Normal it is currently using
is.

If you go to that location and you cannot find a file there, it is then most
likely that some toxic system administrator has marked the file or the
folder outside your permissions.

If none of the above are true, then you might suspect that Word has never
saved the Normal template. In which case, simply use Tools>Language>Set
Language. Select a Language you never use, then select your preferred
spelling language. Click the "Default" button. This will force Word to
recognise a "change" to the Normal template, which in turn will force it to
save a Normal template file.

Hope this helps
