All graphics replaced with {SHAPE \* MERGE FORMAT}

I was editing a footer, and somehow all my graphics disappeared, replaced
with {SHAPE \* MERGE FORMAT}. Hyperlinks also changed appearance. This was
true of all word docs I opened, and the same text appreard when I tried
re-importing the graphics. I couldn't return to default settings through
view, header or Show options, or find any help on this problem to the on the
web, so I'm posting this in case it's of use to someone. or fix the I'm on
Word 2002/XP Pro. In the end I had to restore Word to original settings, and
then graphics returned and recovered docs displayed normally
