all MS OFFICE programs crash on start up

Version: v.X
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Power PC

I am not able to start up MS OFFICE any longer. When ever I start up any of the programs, it crashes and closes. This happens with all of the programs in MS, Word, Excel..etc.. it also happens if I log into a different user account on the same computer. I tried removing the program using the UnInstaller and reinstalling but the same problem occurs. I have posted the error report that I can send to Apple if anyone can figure it out. I would be very grateful if anyone knows what this is happening or how to fix it... Thanks for your time.

According to the error report I believe your biggest problem is that Office
v.X is significantly behind in updates. The log indicates 10.0.0 but 10.1.9
is what it should be. Until that is corrected I don't believe you'll be able
to rectify any other issues that "might" exist. Follow the suggestions here
for a successful update:

http://word.mvps.org/Mac/Update.html

After you apply the update make sure to Repair Disk Permissions & restart
your Mac before attempting to run the apps.

Thanks for responding to my question. Here is an update.

The reason the version for which I had submitted an error report was not the most up to date version was that I had already uninstalled the version on my Mac that was up to date and had tried reinstalling the program. However, since the program had crashed the same way I had not yet done the update.

I have since updated it and run the Disk Utility program to fix any permission problems.. unfortunately, I am still getting only crashes when I try to start up Word. I am pasting again the error report in case you see some other avenue I should pursue to fix this. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated as I use this program quite frequently. I did notice that even after running the 10.1.9 updater (twice) that its still showing version 10.1.8.

I'm certainly no systems engineer, so these crash logs are as Greek to me as
they are to most. I do see suggestions that there may be some degree of
system instablity. It might not be a bad idea to fetch the OS X 10.5.8 COMBO
Update from Apple Downloads & apply it. The combos do a far more
comprehensive job than the "lite' versions delivered by Software Update.

<http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1058comboupdate.html>

Once you've applied it Repair Disk Permissions again, shut down the Mac &
wait a minute or two before starting up.

Not all applications are updated. If you check the Microsoft Component
Plugin, it should show 10.1.9.

/Applications/Microsoft Office X/Office/Microsoft Component Plugin"

Word 10.1.8
Entourage 10.1.6
Excel 10.1.9
PowerPoint 10.1.9

I agree with Bob, that applying the combo should help, but I have seen cases
where it took an "Archive & Install" to fix the issues.

Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or
if it¹s your User¹s folder that contains the problem.

Let us know what you find.

Hi Bob and Diane... Thanks again for your continued help... I downloaded the Combination updater as you suggested and have been running it (twice..) not sure why but it appears to be hanging at Running the Installer stage.. has been showing "about 7 mins remaining" for about 20 mins but I will let it run fully.

Prior to posting my initial post, I did try logging in under a different user on the same computer and had the same crashes as on my user account.

I will let you know how it turns out after I finish the combination installer. Have a nice weekend!!!

If you continue to have a problem with the combo update, shut down your Mac
& boot up from the DVD that came with it. Run Disk Utility - Repair Disk
[Not Repair Disk *Permissions* this time] to see if it finds any errors. If
it does run it repeatedly until all errors have been repaired. Once it's
done, apply the Combo again.

You might need to do the "Archive & Install" if the combo fails to run.

Archive and Install

1) Insert the Mac OS X Install Disc and double-click the Install Mac OS X
icon.

2) Follow the onscreen instructions. In the pane where you select the
destination disk, select your current Mac OS X disk (in most cases, it will
be the only one available).

3) Click Options. If you want to save your existing files, users, and
network settings, select ³Archive and Install,² and then select ³Preserve
Users and Network Settings.² If you want to erase everything on your
computer and reinstall Mac OS X, select ³Erase and Install.² You can¹t
recover erased data.

4) Click Continue.

5) Click Customize to select which parts of Mac OS X you¹d like to install,
or click Install to perform a basic installation (recommended).

Once the install has finished, your system will be at whatever level the
disk you have is. So if your Install DVD/CD disk is 10.5.0, that's what
version of OS will be on your Mac. You will need to download the appropriate
Combo Updater from Apple's site to restore the system to a higher version.
After you run the combo, allow Software Update to download and install any
additional updates.

I'm having the same issue. Was working fine, then I didn't use Word for a few days, not I can't open any Office app. I think it's a larger issue than just our 2 Macs, I think some update somewhere messed things up.

Anyone else having issues? Or can you pinpoint an update that may have been the issue? We have 2 accounts on our Mac and we both install any needed updates when they pop up, so I don't know exactly what may be the issue.

So you have Entourage X running Leopard on a PPC? If not this is not the
same issue and you should start your own thread giving your setup. Otherwise
we don't have the info to help you.
