all my documents now have strange notations

I cut and pasted the contents of an email and saved it as
a word document, from a source I do such saves
regularly. This time I noticed strange demarkations,
sort of like a paragraph symbol and dots between each
word throughout the text. When I opened another
document, it had the same problem and I notice that the
text font was changed. It appears that all my word
documents have been contaminated with this problem! How
do I get rid of this?
