All my office 2003 programmes hang when I use file>open why?

Word, excel, powerpoint. If I open the programme then try to use file>open
the programme hangs then crashes out. It seems I can only open my files by
using windows explorer to open the file and the programe. If I try to save
my work i have to press save and allow it to save to the default save area,
then I do a search in windows explorer and move the file to the folder I
want. Any ideas what the problem is and what I can do about it?

Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop, left-click on
Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped network drives that are
not currently available.

Thats fine - but the computer is not connected to any mapped network drives
that are not currently available. There are 3 computers connected via a
router that also has the printer connected to it - could the problem perhaps
be the router?
