It seems that ever since I upgraded to Win XP Pro, all text docs are saved as Wordpad docs, and they don't seem to be compatible when I save them to a floppy and carry them to another computer. I have Office 97 and have installed both SR-1 and SR-2 patches. Can someone please help?

What is the file extension it is saving them as — .rtf, .txt, or .doc? I
assume .rtf, but go to Windows Explorer and check your file associations
for each extension.

Hi =?Utf-8?B?QnJlbnQgQmV1a2VsbWFu?=,
It seems that ever since I upgraded to Win XP Pro, all text docs are saved as
Wordpad docs, and they don't seem to be compatible when I save them to a floppy
and carry them to another computer. I have Office 97 and have installed both
SR-1 and SR-2 patches. Here's something you can try:
- Right-click a Word icon on the Desktop
- Choose "Properties"
- In the "Target" box, make sure there's a space following winword.exe
- Now type: /r
- OK to close
- Double-click the icon. Word won't start, but you should get a message that it's
re-registered
- Now remove what you typed

With any luck, Word will have re-registered itself as the proper application for
doc files.

Cindy:

I attempted your fix, but the target field would not accept /r within
the quotation marks, and typing /r after the quotes had no effect. I
guess luck wasn't on my side. Any other suggestions?

TIA,

The "brute force" method is to go into Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder
options/File types. Select the file extension (DOC, for example). Then
click "Change". You should be able to select your preferred application
for the extension. (Note: these are the steps in WinXP, if you use a
different version, the exact ones may vary, but this is definitely the
place you have to be.)
