All of my WORD 2003 docs have "transformed" to WORDPAD in txt.

Hello - I have been a user of Professional Word 2003 for 2 yrs. For some
unknown reason all of my documents saved on my hard drive, formatted as a
Word doc and saved in Word have now swithed and are now saved as a text
"Wordpad" document . I am not sure what caused this or how I can correct
it. This has happened to all of my docs - literally 100's - can anyone help?
Why did this happen and how can I correct it? Thanks so much
