All of sudden cells won't accept more than 1 digit

Version: 2004 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel I suspect I've inadvertently set something somewhere that is doing this but cannot fathom what. Two days ago it was working just fine. Now all of a sudden, spreadsheets i've used for years will not accept more than one digit in a cell. I can paste data into cells, but cannot edit it without it changing to a single digit. Anyone have any inspirations as to how to remedy this situation?

This sounds like there might be some sort of validation on the cells?

To remove validation, select cells, go to Data Menu, select Validation, Click Clear All.

Nope, it's not that. Every cell is set to allow any data, and I tried clearing them all just in case, but get no difference. If I type 16, it first puts the 1 in then replaces it with the 6. Must puzzling.

Also find that the same behavior is happening with new workbooks as well as existing ones. No matter what is typed in a cell, each successive character supplants the preceding one. Can't see anything in the Preferences that suggests it controls this, or in the tool bars.

Is your installation of Office 2004 fully updated (11.5.7)?

How about OS X (10.6.2)?

Have you re-launched Excel lately?

{Desperately clutching at straws...} What view are you in? Does this
happen in both Normal and Page Layout views?

It magically seemed to resolve itself. I don't know that I changed anything, but had closed Excel down and didn't go back to it for a day or so and when I next tried it, everything was back to "normal" behavior. Chalk it up to the Gremlins. Thanks for trying to help
