All Office 2004 application no longer start after applying Quicktime patch

M

mik.lernout

I have applied the Quicktime update issues yesterday and since then,
Office 2004 Application will no longer start up. I click the
application icon, it jumps a bit in the dock and than quits. Strangely
I was able to run the Microsoft AutoUpdate which applied the Office
update released a couple of days ago, but did not fix the apps. The
Console does not seem to display anything.

This is killing my productivity... Does anyone know a fix or
workaround?

Mik

PS: I am running a fully updated 10.4.10 MacBook Pro / Intel

Download & apply the OS X 10.4.10 COMBO update for Intel, reapply the Office
11.3.5 followed by 11.3.6, repair permissons. [If 11.3.5 won't apply because
of already going to 11.3.6, just apply the latter.] Hopefully that will get
things humming again.

If that doesn't set things right I'm betting an Archive & Install is in your
future:( Don't hesitate to post back if necessary... it really isn't as bad
as it sounds.

I installed the 10.4.10 COMBO and still nothing runs, not even the
11.3.5 or 11.3.6 updators. Double click, a couple of bounces, then
death.

Are you serios that I have to do an Archive and Install? I have to
reinstall my OS because Word and Excell won't run? That seems nuts
doesnt it? Any idea why this is?

Thanks for helping and I'm not upset with you CyberTaz it just seems
nuts to me that I have to reinstall my OS to get Word to run again.
I'd really like to know what the actual problem is so I can avoid it
in the future.

I'm off to download NeoOffice (neooffice.org) for now until I have 4
hrs to reinstall my OS.

Do MS folks monitor this list? Would be good to have some 'official'
word on this, so that I can avoid the voodoo that caused it in the
first place.

The situation is becoming clearer with time.
You may need to update the prebinding too.
See Apple KB article 306043 (search for the number on Apple's Support
page)
"Mac OS X: Some Applications may not open after Quicktime 7.2 Update"

That now does seem to be excessive. That is one sure way to force
prebinding!

Apple really screwed up. What I find strange is that it has not bitten
everybody. My Mac Pro kept on working happily through the ordinary
update malarkey.

Office applications need a good base on which to run. When things go wonky
with the OS, then it's only natural that some applications will not work as
expected.

We've discussed using SuperDuper!(backup software) before, but this is an
excellent time to remind users about a feature it has that protects you from
system updates that so bad.

One of the options in SuperDuper! is to create what the author calls a
"Sandbox". It's used to revert to pre-update state of your OS. Here's a
description of how this option works:

A Sandbox is a bootable copy of your system, stored on another hard drive or
partition, that shares your personal documents and data with the original.
With SuperDuper!, you actually use the Sandbox as your startup volume. You
can safely install any system updates, drivers or programs in the Sandbox,
without worrying about what might happen to your system. If anything goes
wrong, you can simply start up from the original system. SuperDuper! has
preserved it in its original, pre-disaster state but all your new and
changed personal documents are totally up to date. Within minutes, you're up
and running again without having to go through a difficult and
time-consuming restore process.

SuperDuper! Is $27.95. I¹m not affiliated with the product. Just a satisfied
user. <http://www.shirt-pocket.com/>

The reason the Office applications are not launching is because if any
one is running a Intel based Mac OS, they performed a Mac OS update
and included in this update is Quicktime 7.2 which is crashing all
programs running Rosetta - which is breaking CFM apps on Intel based
Macs including Office, photoshop CS2 for some problems playing flash.
The first thing to do is to boot into a safe boot and browse to
www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ and download Quicktime 7.2 again,
once it is finish it will prompt to restart and when restarting you
should be able to launch the Office applications if not you have to
download the combo updater.
