All Office Word 2003 docs are locked & most toolbar controls greye

All my Office Word 2003 docs are locked & most toolbar controls greyed.
I cannot edit, alter or save any documents. When I try, I receive an error
message saying that the modification cannot be made because the document is
locked. However, this has happened suddenly to ALL my documents.
Almost all the toolbar and dropdown controls are greyed out, so I cannot use
the Protect Document taskpane, or Stop protection command.
Also unable to use Insert menu or Save document.
All I can do is open or close the documents.
Any ideas would be most welcome.

This sounds like "reduced functionality mode" because you have a trial
version of Office 2003 that has expired, or because you have not activated
your full version of Office 2003. What happens if you start Word or Excel
and click on Help | Activate Product?
