All .one files missing! (ON 2010 Beta)

I have somehow lost all of the .one files in all Notebooks. The name
of the notebooks is there, but none of the .one files are.

I see that from File | Open, there is 'Backup' all of the notebooks
are there. In the notebooks are multiple versions of each section.

However, it is not clear how I restore the notebooks: do I have to
create NEW notebooks and then open the latest backup version of each
'section' into the new notebook? Or can I somehow restore the whole
notebook all at once (with the sections coming along with the notebook)?

If you look at those folders in Windows Explorer (Not File | Open) do
you see the .ONE files? What build of OneNote 2010 are you using?

Under File | Open | Open Notebook is the file type (bottom right) set to
"OneNote Table of Contents"?

I have build 14.0.4536.1000.

In Windows Explorer I see the sections names (.one files). However,
of the 7 Notebooks, there are just 2 that have 'onetoc2' files in them.

When I open ON, it says I have 'NO' Notebooks; not even the ones that
have the .onetoc2 files.


By the way, when this happened yesterday, the program crashed and
sent an error message to MS. This happened repeatedly, in rapid
succession: I would get an error message that it was closing down (and
would restart) -- and it would do so multiple times. I finally
unchecked the box about "restart" after shutting down to kill the cycle.

At one point the screen suggested I might want to delete the cache
and I said okay to that.

The notebooks should appear as "Folders" in File | Open, and if you open
those folders you should see the sections listed inside those. If you
open a section it will open the whole notebook that contains the section.

Give that a try.

I see the Notebooks in File | Open (within ON), but no sections --

Windows Explorer).

There were 2 Notebooks where this time there were '.onetoc2' files.
But the sections themselves did *not* show. I opened those .onetoc2
files via ON, and those 2 Notebooks are now present. One Noteboookwas
the Guide from MS that came with the program and the other had just one
page and was recently created as a Notebook.

The other 5 Notebooks (which are my main ones) show no sections
through ON (but do show them via Windows Explorer).

That's the normal way ON works.
If you use File, Open Notebook you only see notebooks = Windows folders,
as Ben mentioned in his last answer.
ON will show you sections = *.one files if you use File, Open section.

It's a little bit unusual, to say the least ;-)

ON doesn't use the standard Open File Dialog from Windows.

This is my second response to this post of yours.

I have found the problem. When I did File | Open | Open Notebook in
ON 2010, the dialog box put a "default" name in the File Name box
('OneNote File' -- or maybe 'OneNote Folder', not sure at this point)
the bottom (right above the 'File Type' box). I selected that name and
then deleted it. Then, when I was in a folder (Notebook) I could see
the .one Section names. I did as you said and when I opened just one
section, the whole Notebook was restored.

I found that default name in the File Name box for each of the
Notebooks when I first clicked 'Open Notebook' from File | Open.

I am back in action. Thank you for your help!
