all subjects dates etc. in "by sender" view are "strikeout" style

My client is having an interesting cosmetic problem with Outlook. I have no
idea what he clicked on, but there is no "Format" menu in standard mail view
-- yet all of his sent items are shown with "strikeout" style on them in the
"by sender" view and some of his e-mails are also appearing in the inbox and
other views with strikeout through them.

Does this mean something? How can I turn it off?
