All Word documents open without styles

All of a sudden, all my Word documents (in Word X) are opening without
any of the styles in which they were created. If I simply close the
document and reopen the document, the document opens with the correct
styles. What's going on?

I tried closing and relaunching Word, but the problem remains.

What do you mean by "without the styles"?

If you see the problem when using File | Open, but *not* when
double-clicking, make sure Enable in the File | Open dialog is *not* set to
Recover Text from Any File.

Dear Daiya:

You nailed it! When opening the document with File/Open, the
"Recover..." option was selected. And after closing the document, I
reopened it from the File/recently opened documents list. The latter
method allowed the styles to be applied.

I recall earlier last week having to extract text from a document
created in another application that was emailed to me and used the
"Recover" option at that time. Apparently, this remains the default
after using it.

Thanks much for your quick reply!
