Allocating Hours Across Dates

Bob

How do I schedule a task for a resource that will consume say 10 hours
of their time across dates such as Start on Jan 1 and end on Jan 5 and
allocate the 10 hours to that resource?

When I schedule this I get a start date of Jan 1 and a finish date of
Jan 2.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I try to have MS Project reflect the real constraints of the tasks and
resources. Your situation is not clear as to what is truly
constraining the task or resource. Is the task, a 5 day (duration)
task for which a resource spreads their time evenly across all 5 days?
Or is it a 10 hour task (10 hours of work, not duration) for which the
resource you assigned is only able to work a limited amount each day,
e.g., 2 hours per day?

If it is the first situation there are two separate constraints
working, the duration of the task is fixed, e.g., it will take 5 days
no matter how many people work on it, and the amount of time the
resource can work on the task is limited, e.g., you only get the
resource for 2 hours per day on your project.
- Set Task Type is Fixed Duration
- Set the duration to 5 days
- Assign the Resource
- Set Work value to 10 hours

If it is the second situation, then you are fixing the work (the
effort) needed to complete the task, e.g., one person will take 10
hours and that is independent of the duration. and again, as in the
first example, the amount of time the resource can work on each task
is limited.
- Set the Task Type to Fixed Work
- Set the Work value to 10 hours
- Assign the Resource
- Set the Units (for the resource assignment on the task) to 25%

There are other solutions and other ways to implement the solutions
(setting task contours, usage views, etc.).
