Allow me to type over an image file in word, without text boxes.

I'm currently designing myself a letterhead. I was shown by a friend (who
didn't know how it was done) a word document that he could type over the
image file, though u couldn't select or edit the image file its self.

Kind of like when you protect the a word document with the 'form protect'
option, as you can see but not edit the image.

Exactley like this with the image staying as what you could call a template/
a form of background but with the abilty to type over it.

Any help is greatly appreciated as this is extremely important.

All you describe is a graphic positioned behind text -- insert the graphic,
select Order from the Draw menu and click 'Send behind text'. However, this
does nothing to protect the graphic or prevent you from selecting it. If the
graphic is entirely within the text area, normal clicking will select the
text rather than the graphic; but you can use the 'Select objects' tool from
the Draw toolbar to select it. And deleting the paragraph to which the
graphic is anchored will delete the graphic also.

As Jezebel says, what you actually witnessed & are trying to do really isn't
very clear and you make no mention of what version of Word is involved, but
here are a couple of additional ideas;

1- Go to View>Header and Footer and Insert your image there, or (if using
2002-2003)

2- You can use Format>Background>Printed Watermark.
