Allow Office updates without CD

F

Frank W. Hill

I performed a full installation of MS Office 2000 from CD and then stored the
CD's safely stored in my home office. I try to keep my computer (XP Pro,
Office 2000 Premium) up to date. While I am able to perform the OS updates,
I am consistently frustrated in my attempts to update Office. I downloaded
the larger update image (approximately 60 MB), but the install fails, looking
for the CD.

I don't know anyone who carries the CD's with them. To require the CD to
perform a security update on MS Office is to discourage the performance of
the update, and, as a corollary, to encourage the use of insecure products.
I made sure that I did not check any updates with the CD icon beside them,
but was still prompted for the CD.

Microsoft already does the "Genuine" check with OS updates. It seems
reasonable that they could do that as well and allow Office products to be
updated without having to have possession of the CD or be on the network from
which the product was originally installed.
