We are wine wholesalers and need to assess a tax per gallon sold. This,
translates, in practical terms, into a tax per bottle of wine. I assume the
same situation would exist if one sold gasoline or cigarettes, too. I would
like to be able to assign a "item tax code" to an item type (in our case a
750ml bottle would be item type 1) and the tax would be simply # of items
sold X rate per item. (Instead of price of item sold X a % rate). Larger or
smaller bottle sizes could have different item tax codes.
bottom line: sales taxes need to be figured on a "per piece" basis as well
as a % of sales basis with allowances for different tax rates depending on
the item type.
